Abu Dhabi Pedestrian Bridges
As part of the road safety initiative in Abu Dhabi City, the Department of Transport was commissioned to build pedestrian bridges in the city urban area as well as the surrounding vicinities.
The DOT’s objective is to create a unique, safe, welcoming, user-friendly, and modern structure that reflect the current futuristic look of Abu Dhabi city, as well as adhere to the wise leadership of the executive council which is to create a visionary modern image for the city’s future.
These structures are conceived to take part of the pedestrian-oriented city, encourage proper street crossings, and reduce fatal accidents.
The winning concept deign was presented to the higher authorities. The design called for two types of solutions: a traditional Mashrabiah cladding, and a modern revolving frame imitating movement of pedestrians. The design also ensured safe and comfortable crossing experience by the use of friendly materials, proper lighting, and accessibility as an application of the universal design.
Ceremonial lighting was introduced elevating the presence of these bridges, and enhancing the urban fabric of Abu Dhabi City.
The design and approach for these bridges were not only thought of as means of crossing, but rather sculptural elements that passer-by would enjoy and relate to.
